SOLVE QUADRATIC EQUATIONS BY FACTORISING
TIP: When doing these sort of problems, remember four things:
a) Factors are numbers which when multiplied together give the number you want to factorise. For example, factors of 8 are 1 x 8 or -1 x -8 or 4 x 2 or -4 x -2.
b) Factorising
is the opposite of expanding the brackets - a good way to check your answer.
c) If you
are dealing with equations of the form x2
+ bx + c, find 2 factors of c,
which
when added together will give you b.
d) If you are dealing with equations of the form ax2 + bx + c, find 2 factors of a multiplied by c which when added together will give you b.
Factorise and hence solve the following quadratic equations:
| 1. x2 -6x +5 = 0 |
|
2. x2 + 4x + 3 = 0
|
| 3. x2 + 2x -24 = 0 |
| 4. x2 -7x + 12 = 0 |
| 5. 10 -3x -x2 = 0 |
| 6. x2 + 5x -24 = 0 |
| 7. 2x2 -3x -5 = 0 |
| 8. x2 - 5x + 18 = 2 + 3x |
